Type: Open awards for architects and architecture students.

ARCHITECT magazine announces its eighth annual R+D Awards program. The awards honor innovative design and systems at every scale—from entire buildings to building systems, discrete products and materials, and digital tools such as software, cloud-based platforms, and mobile apps. The R+D Awards welcome entries of all types to encourage the broadest possible dialogue among architects, engineers, manufacturers, researchers, students, and designers of all disciplines.

The jury will consider newly introduced products and technologies as well as new uses of those already in existence. Entries will be judged for their potential or documented innovation in fabrication, assembly, installation, application, execution, usability, and performance. The jury will also judge entries on their potential to advance the aesthetic, environmental, and social value of architecture.

Judging will take place in May 2014. Winning entries will be notified in late spring 2014 and published in the July 2014 issue of ARCHITECT

Entries must be submitted in one of three categories:

  • Prototype: Products, materials, systems, and software that are in the prototyping and testing phase
  • Production: Products, materials, systems, and software that are currently available for use
  • Application: Products, materials, systems, and software as used in a single architectural project or group of related architectural projects
