International architecture competition for Imagine Hillandale: a charrette that seeks to energize thinking about the use of a unique suburban site for a single-family residence located in the Village of Rye Brook, in Westchester County, New York.
The site, located in a single-family residential zone, comprises approximately 2 acres. It is technically a flag lot, secluded from a residential street, and is bordered on all sides by residential properties, mostly with wooded buffers. The charrette posits a large building envelope, although a substantial portion of the site itself is wooded, and features some steep slopes and rock outcroppings. The site is traversed at its lowest elevation by a stream with a small pond, island, and decorative garden bridge. As a whole, the terrain resembles that of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Usonia” development site, which is located less than 10 miles away, and while modernist design is not a requirement, responsiveness to the site’s unique characteristics will be a primary factor in the evaluation of entries for both redevelopment of the existing residence and for replacement concepts.
