Telluride Arts is pleased to invite architects, urban designers, students, engineers, designers, and artists from around the globe to take part in the 2014 Telluride Coonskin Base Competition, an open competition for generating ideas for the community of Telluride.
In addition to the weekend tour, architects from around the world will submit designs that bring new ideas to a local project. The competition offers a $1,000 award to be determined by a panel of design professionals. The winning designs will be on exhibit over the weekend, and the winner The Design Award will be announced at the closing party.
The objective of this hypothetical architectural design competition is to re-envision Telluride’s Coonskin Base site as a vibrant new community asset. Design proposals should respect and balance the “public use” considerations of the Town of Telluride with the operational and economic interests of the privately-held Telluride Ski Resort. The Coonskin Base area is arguably the most complex and most under-utilized site in Telluride. Given the dynamic complexities of the property, the current arrangement of buildings and uses is lackluster. Past discussions on new developmental strategies have always ended in a public/private stalemate and political entanglements.
