Architectural competition for the expansion of Collège Sainte-Croix in the Swiss city of Fribourg.
Nowadays the school has a main building, a sports hall and a villa partially occupied. The main building and the sports hall were built in 1983 for 500 students.
The university is currently occupied by about 1,000 students. Common areas (classroom, cafeteria, library) were designed for initial capacity and never have been expanded. To be able to absorb future increases of students, the capacity should be increased by 50%. This corresponds to about 1,100 students and 50 classrooms. But could be adapted if necessary to 1,300 students in 60 classrooms.
Moreover, existing buildings currently face many problems and require significant remodeling related to security, insulation, etc.
The contest must propose a general reflection on the spaces, their role and their relationship, with the transformations needed. The building envelope should be reconsidered. The feasibility study, conducted by the architectural firm Simonet and Chappuis, shows that this extension can be done on the site without any problem.
