International architecture competition to develop ideas for the Royal Docks that will integrate green infrastructure and water sensitive urban design to help promote the area as a world class location.
The competition is open to all individuals or teams (students as well as qualified practitioners) with an idea for the Royal Docks, that addresses the challenges given in the brief.
For this exercise, entrants should not necessarily be constrained by restrictions including current planning law and land ownership issues. The design ideas should innovate, inspire and challenge, but entrants are encouraged to consider the practicalities of realising their scheme.
By 2030 two-thirds of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. Around the world a wide variety of research bodies, local and national governments are investing in programmes aimed at improving liveability in cities. The Australia’s Liveable Cities Programme is a AU$20m programme to drive strategic urban development that contributes to productivity, sustainability and liveability in 18 of its capital and major regional cities. Singapore has a ten point plan for the liveable city which includes the development of affordable, mixed-use neighbourhoods, prioritising green transport and building options and drawing nature closer to people. San Francisco’s Liveable City is a 40-year plan to shift travel away from cars to walking, cycling and public transport.London’s Royal Docks comprise three docks in East London: Royal Albert Dock, Royal Victoria Dock and King George V Dock. Collectively they form the largest enclosed docks in the world – with a water area of almost 90 hectares
